UPDATE: Shorty has been adopted!!
Pro-Animales was alerted by a concerned person that there was a sweet dog in really bad shape living at a local gas station. So three of our team went out to assess the dog and see if we could help. We found the dog under a nearby tree. He was afraid of us at first, but once we got a leash around his neck, he really offered no resistance. We picked him up and put him in a crate in the back of the truck. Then we noticed, at the back of the gas station, in a field, another small brown dog, barking insessantly, and it appeared to be tied up. We went to check this dog out, and she was worse than the one we had just rescued. She was tied to a post, with a rope tight around her neck, and a chain wrapped around a fence post. She had no food, no water. She was starving. She was just skin and bones, and covered in fleas. She was shaking so hard, she was so afraid, but you could also tell, she wanted our help. We brought her some food and water, and she ate like she had never eaten before. Another of our group called the local Justice of the Peace, to report the abuse of these animals, to make sure we could rescue these two dogs and provide for their care. She gave us the go-ahead to proceed. So we untied the little girl and walked her back to our truck. We named her CoCo as her coat was the color of a coconut. We then dropped off the first dog, who we named “Shorty”, at one of our rescuers home, and then we took CoCo immediately to our local veteranarian, Dr. Jose for his evaluation. He started her with an IV and added the medicines he felt were necessary for her recovery. We sat with her for two hours, while she just laid on the table, so peaceful. It was as if she was so tired, but relieved that someone was taking care of her. She is so sweet and affectionate. You would think being tied to a fence and starving would create a dog full of rage, but she had none in her. She would just look at us lovingly with those big brown eyes, and she melted our hearts. We then took her to her foster home, where she would get food, love, care and companionship.
The next day we took Shorty to the vet. He was in better shape than the day before as he had been bathed and fed, and was very happy to have a home and a few doggie friends to hang out with at the foster’s house. But even after his baths, he was still covered in so many ticks. None of us had ever seen a dog with so many ticks. Dr. Jose gave him antibiotics, flea and tick meds, and vitamins and told us to bring him back in a week for further evaluation. We are worried he may have tick fever, but hopefully the medications will take care of that.
It has been a few days now since Shorty and CoCo were rescued, and they are looking like new dogs already 💕. They are both due follow up care with Dr. Jose next week to check their progress and evaluate when they will be ready to get spayed and neutered, and start their vaccinations. They are on the road to recovery! Both of these dogs will need forever homes as well so if you are interested in either of these dogs let us know. They both are so sweet, and they are so loving! They know we are all trying to help them! We also still need funds to keep Pro-Animales funded, as we have many animals under our care at the moment. If you are interested in helping to fund our cause, or become a virtual sponsor of one of our cases, please reach out to us. We would be so grateful!
