About Us
We are Pro-Animales Santeños animal rescue. We care for abandoned, neglected and abused dogs and cats. Our foster based rescue program is 100% funded by donations from the Communities we serve and staffed by passionate volunteers in Panamá from Las Tablas to Playa Venao.
Mission: Rescue • Foster • Adopt. To give assistance to animal guardians through education and if necessary, support for the well-being of animals. Prevent and alleviate the suffering of street, abandoned and sick/injured dogs and cats. Find caring foster and adoption homes.
Pro-Animales Santeños formed in June, 2021.
Pro-Animales has applied for tax exempt status in Panamá. We are a 501(c)(3) USA Corporation and achieved tax exempt (allowing our donors to deduct their contributions) November 29, 2021. Our tax exempt number is 87-3770161.
Many of the animals we help may have belonged to families or have given birth with no one to take care of their babies. Some wander our streets in poor health looking for help. No animal deserves this misery or experience especially if it can be avoided.
Pedasí was a small fishing village which became a tourist and ex-pat relocation destination. With the influx came influenced expectations of animal welfare. In 2007 the first sterilization clinic was conducted and in 2013 Animal Advocates was created. That group began operating spay and neuter clinics, offering residents low cost access to sterilization, thus reducing the number of unwanted births. To date, that group now named Spay Panamá Pedasí has sterilized almost 2500 animals.
The natural progressions in animal welfare are rescue, foster, adoption. Pro Animales Santeños was formed in 2021 to address those needs. Our objective is to support dog and cat owners through animal care education and financial assistance with veterinarian care and food. We will operate sterilization clinics when and where necessary.
Pedasí does not have police powers that allow them to seize abused animals. Therefore, we rely on the authority vested in the Juez de Paz (Justice of the Peace). That position has the duty to respond to written complaints and to remove animals from dangerous conditions.
Fund raising by a new group is always a challenge. We rely heavily on donations. Every dollar raised goes to support dogs and cats in Los Santos.
If you can’t adopt, foster. If you can’t foster, sponsor. If you can’t sponsor, donate. If you can’t donate, volunteer.
Our staff consists entirely of volunteers, but the cost of helping cats and dogs in need is expensive. When an animal in need is identified we arrange vet care. If keeping a pet in its current home proves not the best option, Pro-Animales Santeños, along with the support of the Juez de Paz, arranges to move the pet to one of our caring and experienced foster homes. Foster families are provided with food, medical supplies, and additional veterinary visits. We also stock six cat community feeding stations with food for feral cats.
